Juniverse Dexter Cattle

We focus on breeding red, homozygous-polled, purebred registered Dexter cattle with the best conformation and temperament we can find, and which carry the genes to produce A2 milk. We sell breeding stock and delicious Dexter beef.

  • Red: Dexters can be red, black or dun (brown). All are great. We like red.
  • Polled: Cattle without horns are called polled. Dexters can be horned or polled based on their genetics. If an animal is heterozygous-polled, it carries a horned gene and a polled gene, so offspring could be horned. Cattle that do not carry a horned gene at all are called homozygous-polled and can never have horned offspring. We are working toward an entirely homozygous-polled herd.
  • Registered: We are members of the American Dexter Cattle Association (ADCA), which is the oldest and largest Dexter registry in the United States. All of our cattle, except steers, are parent-verified through DNA testing and are registered with the ADCA.
  • Conformation: Most cattle standards for structure of the animal serve an important purpose such as for health, longevity, ease of calving, ability to produce milk, and beef production quality. You can see the conformation standards for Dexter cattle here.
  • Temperament: Dexters are known for being docile cattle that take well to handling, to varying degrees. Temperament is a combination of genetic temperament and handling from birth. We look for and breed Dexters that get along with us, can be milked, and can be trained to walk on a lead. Our herd sees and interacts with us every day, and our calves are halter-trained at weaning.
  • A2: This refers to the beta-casein protein in the milk produced by a cow. Most milk commercially available is A1 beta-casein. Many people believe that A2 milk is easier for some people to digest and, as a result, people who previously believed they were lactose intolerant are actually unable to process the A1 beta-casein.
